Funding Approved for New Roof at Burnside Memorial Hall, Plumtree
The Trustees of Burnside Memorial Hall, Plumtree, are delighted to announce that the FCC
Communities Foundation has approved a grant of £56,961 to help fund the full cost of a new roof
for the hall. The funding has been awarded through the Landfill Communities Fund, and registered
with ENTRUST.
Built in 1921, Burnside Memorial Hall is a vital community venue serving the villages of Plumtree,
Normanton on the Wolds, and Clipston-on-the-Wolds, as well as neighbouring villages including
Tollerton, Keyworth, and Bradmore, which do not have comparable facilities.
Located approximately seven miles south of Nottingham, the hall is extensively used on a daily
basis by a wide range of groups and organisations. These include a private school, children’s nursery,
dance classes, Women’s Institute, arts and flower arranging groups, an astronomical society, fitness
and relaxation classes, and the parish councils of the three main villages. The hall also hosts parties
for all ages, wedding receptions, funeral wakes, community events, charity lunches, afternoon teas,
barn dances, fashion shows, and “meet your neighbours” events. In addition, Burnside Memorial Hall
serves as a Polling Station during elections.
Commenting on the award, Mike Clark, on behalf of the Trustees, said:
“This is a significant investment in the future of our village hall, and we are extremely grateful to
FCC Communities Foundation for awarding us this funding. Without this grant, the hall may have
faced closure, which would have meant regular users having to find alternative venues and potentially
losing important social connections.”
FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that awards grants to community
projects through the Landfill Communities Fund, supporting facilities that bring people together and
strengthen local communities.
Cheryl Raynor, FCC Communities Foundation Grant Manager, said “We’re thrilled to support
Burnside Memorial Hall with this grant. Community spaces like this are essential for bringing people
together and fostering connections. By funding the new roof, we’re helping ensure the hall remains a
vibrant hub for local residents for many years to come.”
It is hoped that work on the new roof will begin in Spring and be completed within approximately six
weeks. Burnside Memorial Hall is expected to remain open throughout the works.

• The Landfill Communities Fund and Scottish Landfill Communities Fund - any waste that is

site. To encourage the re-use, recycle and recovery of more value from waste and use more
environmentally friendly methods of waste disposal, Landfill Tax is charged on each tonne of waste
sent to landfill. Landfill Operators (LOs) are able to redirect a small proportion of landfill tax liability to
support a wide range of community and environmental projects in the vicinity of landfill sites through
the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF) and Scottish Landfill Communities Fund (SLCF). The LCF is
regulated by ENTRUST on behalf of HM Revenue & Customs, and the projects are delivered by
enrolled Environmental bodies (EBs). The SLCF is regulated by SEPA on behalf of Revenue Scotland
and projects are delivered by Approved Bodies (ABs).
