Plumtree Poppy Appeal – Community Update
Plumtree Parish Council would like to thank everyone who has knitted poppies for our
planned Remembrance display. The response has been truly outstanding, and we now have
more than 1,200 knitted poppies.
The Parish Council also has a large number of handmade plastic poppies, and Plumtree
School is producing a further 200 poppies by the end of October.
We are also delighted that two parishioners have generously funded the purchase of two
metal Unknown Tommy statues, which will form part of this year's display.
Johnnie Richards, Chair of Plumtree Parish Council, has acquired three 10-metre
camouflage nets, which will be suspended from St Mary's Church from around 1 November.
Our next step is to attach as many of the knitted poppies as possible to these nets. We would
like to invite everyone to join us for a community poppy-attaching afternoon at Burnside
Memorial Hall on Saturday 5 September, starting at 1.30 pm.
Large tables will be set out so that people can work together comfortably, and tea and cakes
will be provided free of charge. Whether you knitted poppies or would simply like to help,
everyone is very welcome.
Following this session, we will assess how much has been completed and decide whether any
additional sessions are needed.
The completed nets will then be stored until they are installed, weather permitting, on 1
November. They will be hung from St Mary's Church using the fittings already in place. A
selection of plastic poppies will also be displayed in the churchyard, with one of the
Unknown Tommy statues positioned beside the War Memorial.
During the week commencing 3 November, Plumtree School will install its display of plastic
poppies. The Parish Council will also create a further display of plastic poppies on the grass
opposite The Griffin, together with the second Unknown Tommy statue.
We are extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed to this wonderful community
project. Your generosity, time and enthusiasm will help create a fitting tribute to those who
have served and sacrificed.
