Plumtree Poppy Appeal – Community Second Update
Once again, Plumtree Parish Council would like to thank everyone who has knitted poppies
for our planned Remembrance display. The response has been truly outstanding, and we now
have more than 2,000 knitted poppies.
The Parish Council has 250 handmade plastic poppies, and Plumtree School is producing a
further 200 poppies by the end of October. More are needed if anyone can help?
We are also delighted that two parishioners have generously funded the purchase of two
metal Unknown Tommy statues, which will form part of this year's display.
Johnnie Richards, Chair of Plumtree Parish Council, has acquired two 10-metre camouflage
nets, which will be suspended from St Mary's Church from around 1 November. A trial of
one net was hung from the church last Tuesday and, with the odd tweak, everything for both
nets is looking good.
On Saturday, 5 September, around 15 volunteers attached many knitted poppies to one of the
nets, which was then used for the trial. While they did a fantastic job, we soon realised that,
although we still had many knitted poppies left, more would be required to achieve the same
effect.
We are therefore appealing for more knitted poppies to be produced. If you are able,
please get knitting! More wool, buttons and patterns are available in a bag at the back of the
church, which is open daily from 9:30am to 5:30pm. If you have any questions or problems,

Volunteers Needed – On Saturday, 17 October, from 1:00pm, another session of
attaching poppies to the nets is planned, and we need as many volunteers as possible if we are
to complete the mission.
Large tables will be set out so that people can work together comfortably, and tea and cakes
will be provided free of charge. Whether you have knitted poppies or would simply like to
come along and help, everyone is very welcome. The completed nets will then be stored
until they are installed, weather permitting, on 1 November. They will be hung from St
Mary's Church using the fittings already in place.
We are extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed to this wonderful community
project. Your generosity, time and enthusiasm will help create a fitting tribute to those who
have served and sacrificed.
